Description

Mont-Saint-Michel stands in the middle of an open bay overlooking the English Channel, invaded by the most powerful tides in Europe. This jewel of the Middle Ages, comprising a vast monastic complex overlooking a walled village, was, like Rome and Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the medieval West. More than a thousand years after the emergence of this spiritual centre, the abbey's religious vocation remains intact, as evidenced by the presence of the Brothers and Sisters of the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem and the continuity of pilgrimages. The author invites us to discover the history and architecture of Mont-Saint-Michel, without neglecting the problem of the silting up of the Mont, the resolution of which will be a real challenge for future generations.
