Description

Designed and built between 1902 and 1908, following the model of the noble houses on the island of Delos (2nd century BC), Villa Kérylos is not a mere reproduction but a reinvention of ancient Greece. Far from being a pastiche, Théodore Reinach, the patron, and Emmanuel Pontremoli, the architect, aimed to create an original work by "thinking Greek." The residence, conceived as a total work of art, subtly combines ancient luxury with the modern comfort characteristic of Belle Époque villas. The architect and his patron not only created a Greek house but also reproduced its furniture, tableware, fabrics, and decorations. Villa Kérylos represents the culmination of an artistic and intellectual endeavor. This extensively illustrated album delves into the history of this unique creation and reveals the richness and subtlety of its decor. The author, Adrien Goetz, a great connoisseur of the villa, guides the reader through a detailed tour, enriched by his intimate knowledge of the place.
