Description

The megalithic site of Carnac, dating back 6,500 years, is a major location in European prehistory. Its roughly 3,000 standing stones are spread across 40 hectares and 4 kilometers in length in an architecturally organized manner that's full of grandeur. Recent studies have linked the history of these alignments to developments during the Neolithic period, the beginning of settled life. The rows of standing stones allowed access to a space considered sacred, the "enclosures." Based on the latest research findings, the author, in the first part, recounts the history of these Neolithic temples, their significance, the society that created them, and the people who built them. The second part offers a guided tour, with commentary on the images, through the three major fields of standing stones: Kerlescan, Kermario, and Le Ménec.
