Description
Built on the banks of the Loire or its tributaries, or sometimes further inland, the castles that dot the 'valley of the kings' numbered well over a hundred between the 15th century and the dawn of the 17th century. Today, some have disappeared, but many have survived and are open to the public. Generally modified over the centuries, they have kept pace with France's architectural and cultural evolution. From world-famous estates such as Chambord, Azay-le-Rideau and Chenonceau, to more modest manor houses such as La Bussière, Launay and Troussay, not forgetting the great sites overlooking the valley such as Amboise, Chaumont and Chinon. Parks and gardens also feature prominently, with Talcy, Valençay and Villandry... An introduction to the history of the region guides the reader through a pictorial tour of around fifty châteaux, listed in alphabetical order and accompanied by a map to help them find their way around the region. Part 3 then offers the reader some unique insights into the valley and its history: the boatmen on the river, the 'beautiful language', and the famous vineyards.
