Description

This is the major cultural event of 2021: after a long period of renovation, the Hôtel de la Marine opens its doors to the public. This exceptional monument, returned to the people of Paris, is one of the major tourist sites in the capital, located at Place de la Concorde. This lavishly illustrated album allows you to discover the extent of the work carried out in the former Garde-Meuble de la Couronne by the Center of National Monuments. It has restored a sumptuous setting that played a major role in the organization of French political life. Visitors can explore the spectacular glass roof designed by architect Hugh Dutton above the Cour de l'Intendant, rediscover 18th-century decorations, meticulously restore Gabriel's moldings, and experience a new visitor route and furnishing, thanks in part to the Mobilier national. The Hôtel de la Marine is also home to the Foundation for the Memory of Slavery, as well as masterpieces from the Al Thani collection that will be revealed to the public. One square. One architect. One king. The combination of these three factors allowed the building to come to life: Louis XV chose a royal square, entrusted to Jacques-Ange Gabriel, the King's first architect. After housing the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, it became the headquarters of the Secretary of the Navy after the Revolution, and later the Hôtel de la Marine. Deconsecrated in 2005, its destiny was entrusted to the Center of National Monuments. Alexandre Gady, an eminent architectural specialist, offers a chance to discover a remarkable monument in French history.
