He was one of the "twenty-three" sung by Léo Ferré. Missak Manouchian died for France. But long before taking up arms to defend freedom, this Armenian immigrant armed himself with words. His poetry speaks of the nostalgia for his wounded country, his suffering as a stateless foreigner, his aspiration for brotherly love among men, and his anger against injustices.

For the first time translated in its entirety, his poetic work is an unprecedented preamble to his commitment to the Resistance.
