About the monument

Les Eyzies-de-Tayac

Scientific hotspots. Deposits in La Ferrassie, La Micoque, Le Moustier and Laugerie-Haute show the different layers of human occupation during the Palaeolithic Age which were used to define material cultures.

Decorated caves and shelters. The caves of Font-de-Gaume, with its polychrome animal drawings, and Les Combarelles with its engravings; the sculptures in the rock shelters of Cap-Blanc and Le Poisson: all these sites harbour first-rate examples of expressive symbolism, on a par with those at Lascaux.

Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, the world prehistoric capital. The quantity and quality of the archaeological remains around Les Eyzies are unique in western Europe. Extended several times, the Musée national de la Préhistoire (National Prehistory Museum) presents collections of major interest for the history of humankind in a contemporary setting.
