Description

While there are still a few ancient structures, ranging from traces to the most imposing monuments, it was in the nineteenth century and especially between the wars, with the advent of modern sport, that the corpus was built up. This dossier looks at the various issues raised by the protection and conservation of these facilities, which, as long as they remain in use, are subject to considerable constraints in terms of operation and adaptation. Finally, the subject calls for a cross-disciplinary approach to all areas of heritage, real estate and movable property, tangible and intangible.

These different issues will be addressed through a number of examples, including the restoration of the amphitheatre in Nîmes; the jeu de paume at Compiègne Castle; Tony Garnier's Gerland swimming pool (1913-1932) in Lyon; Pier-Luigi Nervi's Artemio Franchi stadium (1929); the Chaban-Delmas stadium (1932) in Bordeaux; the Charléty stadium (1939-1994) in Paris; the sports park hall known as "la Soucoupe" (1962-1970) in Saint-Nazaire; the Tournesol swimming pools (1970-1980 programme); the Parc des Princes (1969-1972) in Paris. We will also look at various types of building, such as racecourses and mountain refuges.
